Cypriot Press and Information Office launched the "Journalists Matter" initiative ahead of the Council of Europe's campaign for the safety of journalists, to be launched in the fall of 2023.

Patrick Penninckx, head of the Information Society Department of the Council of Europe, participated in the discussion entitled Protecting journalists, protecting democracy, with Matthew Caruana Galizia, journalist, director of "The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation" and son of murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, and Herman Grech, editor-in-chief of "Times of Malta" and director of the play "They Blew Her Up', which tells the story of the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, journalist and anti-corruption activist, through testimonies. Aliki Stylianou, the Director of the Press and Information Office, moderated the discussion.

For the launch of the Cypriot initiative that will become part of the campaign, Patrick Penninckx officially handed over the "Protect journalists, save democracy" stamp. He also remarked on the resolution on the safety of journalists adopted during the Conference of Ministers responsible for Media and Information Society Artificial Intelligence – Intelligent Politics Challenges and opportunities for media and democracy in Nicosia on 10-11 June 2021.
