Voltar Persveilig

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Persveilig- PersVeilig is the initiative of the Steering Group on Aggression and Violence against Journalists, consisting of the police, the Public Prosecution Service, the Society of Editor-in-Chief and the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ).

In terms of prioritisation, PersVeilig's work plan steers the efforts for 2024. This year, the focus lies on devising an appropriate approach to address specific aggression directed towards women journalists. Simultaneously, attention is being given to tackling online harassment. Consultations with ministries, regulators, and other relevant parties are underway regarding the establishment of a reporting facility for journalists towards online platforms (also in connection with the new DSA regulation). Efforts are also being made to enhance understanding of online harassment through monitoring.

In addition, PersVeilig will develop a bespoke training programme for press photographers and camera operators this year. This group often faces threats and intimidation and hence requires specialised support.

Moreover, PersVeilig will commence a pilot programme for writers in the spring 2024, spanning a year. Writers will have the opportunity to reach out to PersVeilig to report instances of aggression and receive advice on appropriate courses of action. Furthermore, PersVeilig will offer training sessions for writers to equip them with skills to effectively navigate challenging situations.

Employers

Employers in the media sector are responsible for the safety, health and well-being of the journalists working for them. This means that employers ensure sufficient preparation time and preventive measures, such as effective training, for any form of reporting or publication that may involve risks. The document Security plan for Dutch media by PersVeilig is provided for this purpose.

Journalists

Journalists attend training courses that the employer offers and will act in accordance with the responsibilities set out in the ‘Dutch Media Security Plan’. For freelancers without a client, training courses will be offered by or via PersVeilig.
For journalists, it is of the utmost importance that all incidents are reported to the employer and to the PersVeilig hotline.
