Students in Armenia discuss the safety of journalists on World Press Freedom Day

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia organised an interactive session for Eurnekian High Public School of Mother See Holy Etchmiadzin of Vagharshapat city, to increase awareness regarding the importance of safeguarding journalists in democratic societies. The event was organised within the Council of Europe Campaign for the Safety of Journalists- “Journalists Matter”.

For the past two years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, has organised weekly visits for students to explore the Ministry’s work and career opportunities. The visits occur weekly, offering participants the chance to familiarise themselves with the Ministry’s operations and think about future career paths.

On 3 May, coinciding with World Press Freedom Day, 20 students from Eurnekyan High School participated in a special session discussing journalists’ safety and democratic values. The event included insights into the Council of Europe’s principles and the “Journalists Matter” Campaign.

Due to the positive reception, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to hold similar awareness events biannually, aligning with World Press Freedom Day and the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

This initiative aims to empower the next generation and foster a safer environment for journalists worldwide.
