On 9 October, the Department for the Execution of Judgments of the ECHR participated in the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference, organised by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). At the thematic session dedicated to judicial independence, the Department emphasised the importance of the standards developed by the European Court in this respect, in particular under Article 6 of the Convention, which are underlying the entire Convention system.
The Department pointed out examples of cases concerning judicial independence, the execution of which is currently supervised by the Committee of Ministers, and underlined the important role played by civil society, not only by advocating for a need to respect judicial independence at the domestic level or through interventions in the proceedings before the European Court, but also at the execution stage, through communications addressed to the Committee of Ministers.
