Social rights committee condemns local authority housing in Ireland

The European Committee of Social Rights has partially upheld a complaint from the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) against Ireland concerning local authority housing.

The committee found Ireland to be in violation of the European Social Charter on the grounds that the government has failed to take sufficient and timely measures to ensure the right to housing of an adequate standard for a number of families.

Four further complaints relating to different aspects of the charter were rejected by the committee.

The Committee of Ministers will now discuss this decision with a view to adopting a formal resolution to the Irish authorities based on the committee’s findings.
