[16/10/08 10:00] Prison conditions, measures against discrimination, and independent national human rights structure will be some of the main topics that the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, will assess during his two-day high-level visit to Monaco starting on 20 October.

During the course of his visit, Commissioner Hammarberg will be received by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II. Mr Hammarberg will also hold meetings with the State Minister and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Finance and Justice, as well as with representatives of the judiciary.

The Commissioner will also meet with representatives of civil society and visit institutions human rights relevance, such as the Monaco prison and police station.

The visit is organised in the framework of the Commissioner's mandate to assess the implementation of human rights commitments by all Council of Europe member states. An assessment report with relevant recommendations will be published early 2009.
