Greek Chairmanship of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers
The Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe was handed over from Georgia to Greece on 15 May 2020 during an online meeting in the presence of representatives of its 47 member states, with the participation of Congress President Anders Knape.
The new Chairman of the Committee of Ministers, Nikos Dendias, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Greece, outlined the priorities of the Greek Chairmanship for the next six months. These include “Protection of human life and public health in the context of a pandemic – Effectively responding to a sanitary crisis in full respect for human rights and the principles of democracy and the rule of law”.
The President of the Congress underlined the essential role of local and regional authorities in the face of the COVID-19 crisis. He stressed the need to ensure that the measures taken did not undermine the founding values of Europe in accordance with the guidelines addressed by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe to governments.
Priorities of the Greek Chairmainship
The Greek delegation to the Congress comprises of 7 representatives and 7 substitutes.
The head of the delegation is Mr Konstantinos KOUKAS.
