| | | | | | “May the faith which has inspired pilgrims throughout history, uniting them in a common aspiration and transcending national differences and interests, inspire us today, and young people in particular, to travel along these routes in order to build a society founded on tolerance, respect for others, freedom and solidarity”
| | Santiago de Compostela Declaration, 1987 |
| | | On 23 October 1987, the Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Routes was chosen by the Council of Europe as its first Cultural Route and as a symbol of European heritage and identity, “a European space bearing a collective memory and criss-crossed by roads and paths which overcome distances, frontiers and language barriers”. 30 years later, 32 certified Cultural Routes promote the core values of the Council of Europe: human rights, democracy, cultural diversity and exchanges across boundaries. The Annual Advisory Forum, which will take place this year in Italy (Lucca, 27-29 September) will be the opportunity to celebrate this important anniversary in the history of the Cultural Routes Programme. | | |
