The impact of Artificial Intelligence on human rights, democracy and the Rule of Law in building a person-friendly future is the theme around which the High-Level event being hosted on Monday 4^th April will revolve. It is being held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and co-organised by the Italian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and the Council of Europe as part of the Italian Semester programme of events.

The meeting will take place at the Farnesina starting from 10.30am with speeches by Undersecretary Benedetto Della Vedova and the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Bjơrn Berge, followed by Hon. Alessandro Fusacchia, President of the Parliamentary intergroup on artificial intelligence. Paola Pisano will moderate (scientific expert of the Minister Luigi Di Maio for the digital economy and evolution). It will also see the participation of representatives of the European Commission, as well as from the world of academia, from industry and from institutions. This signifies the important step in confirming Europe as a point of reference for the world in this field that is at the heart of the reflections. The impact of Artificial Intelligence will therefore be examined in depth from the perspective of the European Union  (by Kilian Gross, Artificial Intelligence Policy Development and Coordination, European Commission, who will investigate their relationship from a European perspective),  of the academic world (from Virginia Dignum, Umeå University), of ethics (from Paolo Benanti, Gregorian University), and of that of industry, looking at business models (from Cornelia Kutterer, Microsoft), and the protection of children’s rights (with Guido Scorza, Italian Data Protection Authority).

The conclusions will provide an in-depth analysis and layout, guiding inputs on the work of the Council of Europe’s Committee on Artificial Intelligence (CAI), whose opening session will always take place at the Farnesina from Monday afternoon and will continue until Wednesday 6^th April. The CAI’s goal, under the mandate of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, will be to negotiate the text for use as a common legal instrument for the Organization on artificial intelligence. This is a complex and ambitious exercise which will therefore be launched under the guidance of and at the instigation of the Italian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
