Kuopio is a city located in the Kuopio is a city located in the region of Northern Savonia. It has a population of 122,615 (April 2023), which makes it the 8th most populous municipality in Finland. Kuopio is one of the major urban, economic, and cultural hubs of Eastern Finland and is known nationwide as one of the most important study cities and one of the centers of attraction and growth.

Representation of different ethnic and linguistic groups are diverse in the city. People whose mother language is different than Finnish, Swedish or Sami consist of 5% of the population. Kuopio also has a long experience in migrant reception and a multicultural centre. There are also two reception centres in Kuopio.
