Welcome to the online training on the guide the Intercultural City step-by-step!
The experience of the local authorities participating in the Intercultural Cities (ICC) programme shows that diversity can be managed as a resource. Despite its complexity and the potential conflicts that may arise in diverse communities, a positive and skilful approach to diversity management can lead cities to hugely benefit from what migrants, minorities and people with diverse background can offer to the community. In that sense, the intercultural integration model is applicable to all dimensions of diversity (cultural, gender, sexual identity, age, socioeconomic status, etc.).
To do this, local authorities need to review a range of institutional settings, services and policies, and create the appropriate governance structures, mechanisms and policies to remove obstacles as well as enhance the integration of migrants and diversity inclusion.
This course is based on the guide The intercultural city step by step as well as a set of instruction videos. We invite you to familiarise yourselves with the materials, ask questions and to share it with your colleagues.
Why take this course?
The course is a tool for assisting cities in implementing the intercultural integration model. It is intended primarily for cities with a significant level of diversity, whose leadership is strongly committed to making diversity an advantage for community development and who are ready to invest political capital, time and resources into ensuring this approach brings its fruits. The principles, tools and examples presented in this course will also hopefully inspire others looking for solutions and ideas of how to ensure equality, inclusion and societal cohesion in culturally diverse environments.
Practical elements
Each module of this course invites participants to familiarise themselves with the different sections of the guide. Participants are therefore advised to save the guide on their computer or similar for easy access. The course moves through the guide in chronological order to help with finding the corresponding section in the guide.
All modules include a video by Carla Calado (ICC expert), and references to the guide The intercultural city step by step as well as a short quiz and further questions to consider.
The modules can be accessed through this landing page and vary in length from 30 to 120 minutes. The course and individual modules are not intended to be completed in one go, but rather as a longer learning and reflection process which can be completed in at the participants own pace.
In each quiz there is one correct answer. Please choose the answer option which you find best corresponds to the question. All participants will receive the correct answers and feedback after each question.
The participation in the course is anonymous and participation is free. There is no certificate of completion for this course.
