On October 19, a study visit of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Mrs Lyudmyla Denisova to the Council of Europe took place, on the initiative of the Special Adviser of the Secretary General for Ukraine of the Council of Europe and under the scope of the CoE project “Enhancing the implementation of human right standards in Ukraine”. Prevention of ill treatment, data protection and non-discrimination were among core issues addressed during the visit of Ms Denisova to the Council of Europe.

Ms Denisova held a series of meetings with representatives of the Council of Europe, responsible for key areas of cooperation with Ukraine in order to strengthen the observance of human rights and enforcement of ECtHR judgments in the country.

During the meeting with Ms. Denisova, the Special Adviser emphasized that the Commissioner for human rights in Ukraine has a key role in the protection of all the human rights of the Ukrainian population. He underlined that the respect of the rule of law in the country, equal social rights for all, especially for vulnerable groups like IDPs, children, and women, the effective justice system are key factors in order to increase public confidence and trust in the institutions.

He invited the Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner to continue her important work to improve the daily life of the Ukrainian population and to ensure full respect of the Council of Europe three pillars: human rights, democracy and rule of law in the country.

On the same day, Mrs Denisova met Mr Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe. They agreed that the effective functioning of the Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights institution in Ukraine is essential for strengthening of domestic human rights protection mechanisms in the country.
