Back Council of Europe Anti-Torture Committee publishes report on Moldova

The Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) has today published the report on its visit to Moldova in September 2004, together with the response of the Moldovan Government. These documents have been made public at the request of the Moldovan authorities.

The CPT report examines the situation of persons detained by the police and in prisons, including at a colony for minors and at the unit for life-sentenced prisoners of Prison No. 17 in Rezina. The report also addresses the strategy aimed at controlling and combating tuberculosis within the prison system.

Following the response of the Moldovan Government, representatives of the CPT returned to Moldova at the end of November 2005, to hold talks with the national authorities about concrete measures taken to implement the recommendations made by the Committee. The Committee’s representatives also examined recent developments on the spot concerning prisons and the police.
