Croatia makes its mark in the digital exhibition “Free to Create - Create to be Free”

The “Free to Create - Create to be Free” digital #exhibition, a unique initiative by the Council of Europe, accompanies the Manifesto on Artistic Freedom in the Digital Era and Reports on Artistic Freedom in Europe. This project under the framework of “Free to Create - Create to be Free” launched by the Committee on Culture, Heritage and Landscape (CDCPP) of the Council of Europe, highlights the importance of freedom of artistic and creative expression in the face of global challenges.

Now Croatia has joined the digital exhibition curated by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb with two groundbreaking artists. Tomislav Gotovac (1937-2010) is considered the forerunner of performance art in Croatia and was one of the country’s most significant artists in the late 20th century. His work “Zagreb, I Love You” has become one of the most iconic public artworks in Croatia. In remembering and discussing Tomislav Gotovac's public performances, it is important to acknowledge his commitment to the principle of 'free creation’. This concept was not just a philosophical stance but a practical approach to art-making that encouraged spontaneity, improvisation, and engagement with the audience.

Sandra Vitaljić (1972) is focused on social issues and dealing with the topics of domestic violence, immigration, collective memory, and the construction of national identity. In the theoretical and curatorial work, she is engaged with conflict photography and the ethics of photographic representation as photography captures critical social issues like domestic violence, collective memory, and national identity construction. Her work “Beloved” now joining the digital exhibition showcases Vitaljić's commitment to using photography as a tool for social commentary and change, urging us to reflect on the power of images to shape societal understanding and attitudes.
