The Council of Europe, in co-operation with the Spanish authorities, organised a high-level International Conference on the fight against trafficking in human organs, which took place on 25 - 26 March 2015 in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
During this conference, and following the decision of the Committee of Ministers, the Council of Europe Convention against Trafficking in Human Organs was opened for signature on 25 March 2015. Member States of the Council of Europe and States outside Europe were invited to sign the Convention on this occasion.
The Conference brought together governmental experts and policy-makers responsible for combating trafficking in human organs, as well as representatives of international organisations and academic experts, to share their experience.
The aims of the Conference were:
- To share the views, concerns and approaches of the different stakeholders that participate in the fight against trafficking in human organs;
- To discuss the benefits and challenges in ratifying the Convention;
- To encourage states to sign and ratify the Convention.
