At the beginning of this new year, we are pleased to remind you of the launch of our new publication to take place on Thursday, 21 January 2021: the Council of Europe Handbook on children’s participation “Listen – Act – Change” - a tool for all professionals working for and with children across Europe.
The challenging year of 2020 has shown to all stakeholders, including children themselves, the importance of keeping the issue of child participation high up on governmental agendas, and of qualifying professionals concerned to implement any political objectives in this respect. In the light of COVID-19-related confinement, restrictions and new ways of providing essential services to children, not only children, but also many adults have seen how important it is to let children participate in decisions affecting them in order to better respond to their needs. Likewise, all parties have seen that continuous child participation requires qualified staff who know how to reach out to children, and how to use dedicated information and communication technologies.
As a response to some of these needs, the Council of Europe has developed the Handbook for professionals working for and with children on children’s participation, to support professionals in implementing the Council of Europe Recommendation on the participation of children and young people under the age of 18 and Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Handbook is a practical tool combining different modules to explain the concept of child participation in theory and practice, and to guide professionals towards its implementation in different settings - individually, collectively and in specific institutional contexts.
The online launch event will bring together experts who developed the Handbook - Anne Crowley, Cath Larkins, and Luis Manuel Pinto - and interested professionals of various backgrounds to discuss the importance and challenges of child participation. Please save the date and consult our webpage for further information, as we draw closer to the event!
This publication was produced thanks to the voluntary contributions provided by a number of Council of Europe member states (Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Estonia, Georgia, Luxembourg, Monaco and Ukraine).
