Steering Committee for the rights of the child: key takeaways from the 9th Plenary meeting

During its 9th Plenary meeting held in Strasbourg on 28-30 May 2024, the  Steering Committee for the Rights of the Child (CDENF) reviewed the progress of implementation of the Council of Europe Strategy for the Rights of the Child (2022-2027)

The CDENF approved two topical Mapping Studies on legal frameworks related to the rights of the child and artificial intelligence, and children’s access to quality mental health care. The Committee further followed up on the work of its two subordinate bodies, the Committee of experts on the rights and the best interests of the child in parental separation and in care proceedings (CJ/ENF-ISE, jointly with the CDCJ) and the Committee of Experts on the prevention of violence (ENF-VAE). It welcomed a Feasibility study on age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education to strengthen responses for inter alia preventing and combatting violence against children, including sexual violence and harmful behaviour, and provided guidance to the ENF-VAE to start working on a draft recommendation.

Moreover, the CDENF held a thematic exchange on “Safeguarding children from the risks of accessing online pornographic content in order to prepare a thematic guidance note on the issue.

Finally, the Committee elected Ružica Boškić (Slovenia) as Chair, Solvor Bäcklund (Norway) as its Vice-Chair and Rareș Petru Achiriloaie (Romania) as a Bureau member.

The next Committee meeting will take place in Strasbourg on 3-5 December 2024.
