The protection of national minorities in Georgia and the promotion of their languages are essential elements in maintaining the country’s stability and social cohesion. Through a series of regional meetings, the Council of Europe informs the national minorities about European standards in the field of minority language promotion.

The authorities receive legal advice with a view to preparing ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Furthermore, the awareness of national minorities in the general population is being increased through cultural initiatives which showcase the contributions made by these groups, thereby combating stereotypes about them.

In order to strengthen minority language education, thousands of households are being informed about possibilities to enroll children in local schools teaching minority languages.
