CyberSouth+, a joint initiative of the European Union and the Council of Europe, supported the Palestinian Prosecution Office to organise an online workshop, aiming to provide the Palestinian criminal justice professionals with a better understanding of the tools provided under the Budapest Convention and the corresponding domestic legal framework.
The discussion included also capacity building efforts and training courses on cybercrime investigation and electronic evidence that can be delivered by the Cybercrime Programme Office of the Councill of Europe.
As a result of this workshop the Palestinian representatives increased their knowledge on how to qualify cyber offences based on the international standards and application of the investigative powers in cybercrime investigations or other investigations involving electronic evidence.
The Budapest Convention , with 76 States Parties, remains the most effective global criminal justice treaty on cybercrime. The Convention provides for (i) the criminalisation of conduct, ranging from illegal access, data and systems interference to computer-related fraud and sexual exploitation of children online; (ii) procedural laws for criminal investigations in line with human rights standards and (iii) international police and judicial cooperation on cybercrime and electronic evidence.
The CyberSouth+ project is committed to continue to support the Palestinian authorities on strengthening their capacities on fighting against cybercrime and further capacity building activities will be delivered in the next period.
