The Council of Europe Campaign for the Safety of Journalists presented in Brussels

The Media and Internet Governance of the Information Society Department of the Council of Europe was represented by Ms Rodica Ciochina at the final conference Safety4Journalists, organised by the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.

During the discussion on the role of institutions and states in ensuring the safety of journalists, the Council of Europe representative informed about the upcoming launch of the Council of Europe campaign for the safety of journalists in October. She emphasized the importance of adopting action plans and setting up mechanisms to implement them for the safety of journalists.

The campaign awareness raising activities will include the important aspect of restoring trust in the media and reaching out to all parties for a common understanding of the direct impact of a safe environment for journalists on democracy.

Synergy with the work of other partner organisations will also be crucial. The conference, held in Brussels, brought together journalists, experts, representatives of the international organisations, and trade unions to discuss the safety of journalists both physically and psychologically, including in the online environment.
