Empowering the Future: Making the Social Rights of Youth Real

As part of the UN Summit of the Future Action Days, a side event on "Empowering the Future: Making the Social Rights of Youth Real" will take place on 20 September 2024, in New York, at the United Nations Headquarters, Room CR2, from 16:45 to 18:00 EST (22:45-00:00 CET).

The session will assess the effectiveness of international standards, such as the European Social Charter, in promoting youth rights, highlighting both successes and limitations. Panelists will then identify gaps in addressing key issues such as unemployment, education, housing and youth participation in decision-making. The discussion will focus on proposing practical solutions to strengthen international mechanisms for the protection of youth rights. Finally, the event will highlight the need for greater cooperation between international organisations, governments, civil society and youth organisations to advance youth rights and social protection.

The 75-minute session aims to bring together key stakeholders and prominent speakers from state authorities, international organisations, and civil society to discuss mechanisms that can strengthen the protection and promotion of young people's rights and address the urgent need to translate their social rights into living realities.

The main organiser and sponsor of the side event is the Council of Europe. The event is co-sponsored by Andorra, Lithuania, Mexico, the Kingdom of Morrocco, in partnership with the International Labour Office, the European Union Fundamental Rights Agency and the European Youth Forum.
