This one-day and half event gathered 140 participants from European and the Southern Mediterranean countries, representatives of governments, national parliaments, local and regional authorities and civil society experts, and other relevant stakeholders.

The conference promoted cooperation and coordination of the relevant actors in the region, through the sharing of protection and integration practices and mechanisms with proven success.

The international conference on “Migrant, refugee and asylum-seeking women and girls in the EuroMed region” was the follow-up of the roundtable on “Women refugees, migrants and asylum seekers in Europe and the Southern Mediterranean: Meet the immediate emergency needs and find the longer term solutions” organised in the framework of the Lisbon Forum 2016.

Concept Note

In order to reinforce efforts to prevent and combat violence against women, the North-South Centre trained experts on preventing and combating violence against women in the Southern Mediterranean. With the aim of establishing a network of trainers/experts in the Southern Mediterranean countries, this activity enabled them to disseminate Council of Europe and North-South Centre expertise on preventing and combating violence against women at the national level, while taking into account the current national contexts and needs.

Side event organised by Global Shapers: Engaging the Male Perspective in Combating Violence against Women and Women Economic Empowerment

Global Shapers Tunisia, partner of the of the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe’s Training of Experts on the Human Rights-based Approach in Combating Violence against Women organised a side-event on Men and Women fostering gender equality.

Under the title “Engaging the Male Perspective in Combating Violence against Women and Women Economic Empowerment”, this unique initiative invited men to discuss women issues.Experts and enthusiasts about women’s rights and combating violence against women from Southern Mediterranean region answered men’s questions. Based on the exchange of expertise and best practices between women’s rights experts and men from the Tunisian civil society organisations and international organisations, the side event promoted and encouraged the role of men in empowering women, in particular, through entrepreneurship.

Concept note

A one-day training on the use of the Istanbul Convention as a tool to combat violence against women for women organisations in Europe and Southern Mediterranean regions. The training provided NGOs with technical knowledge on the Istanbul Convention. Designed for 16 members of the working group, among which six representatives of the Moroccan civil society, it focused on three main themes: prevention, protection, and information.

Experts from Voice of Libyan Women and UN Women, Solidarités Femmes France, Italian Institute of Statistics and Lam Echaml, Civic Association Network in Tunisia delivered a training based on case studies and simulation exercises, to help identify and elaborate tools, methods and strategies to fight violence against women.

In the framework of the Lisbon Forum 2016 and on the occasion of the International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women, the North-South Centre organised a roundtable dedicated to “Women Refugees, Migrants and Asylum Seekers in Europe and the Southern Mediterranean” in order to “meet the immediate emergency needs and find the longer term solutions” on the 25th November.

The Workshop will tackle the protection of women and girls against gender-based violence to bridge the gap between existing solutions and international standards and their effective implementation, as well as to explore the current potential of the regional and multi-stakeholder cooperation. As such a wide topic, the Workshop will delve into two focus topics: the cross-border cooperation in protecting refugee and asylum-seeking women and girls and the domestic implementation of the victim-centred approach.

The event will feature a variety of keynote speakers, as well as two working groups gathering civil society experts. The role of youth in fostering gender equality and the issue of violence in youth relationships will also be addressed.

To promote cooperation, dialogue and solidarity through peer exchange and networking and recognising that the implementation and application of gender-related laws is a common challenge in the Euro-Mediterranean region, the workshop will assess the current challenges and opportunities while strengthening the role of women organisations and civil society.

Following-up on the Amman Workshop: “Strengthening Capacities of Women Organisations”, held in October 2017, and built on the inputs of civil society experts, the second workshop of the North-South Centre’s Empowerment of Women project will foster cooperation and offer key regional actors the opportunity to share expertise and/or experiences from the political, legal, administrative and civil society perspectives.

The North-South Centre organised, in partnership with Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD)-Legal Aid, a workshop on “strengthening capacities of women organisations” in Amman.

The event gathered expertise on women´s rights and gender equality and encouraged exchanges of best practices from different countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region and Europe.

It was the opportunity to reinforce cooperation between the four levels of the Quadrilogue (governments, parliaments, local and regional authorities and civil society organisation) and encourage a participatory approach in designing and implementing reforms.

Biographies of the speakers

The objective of this session is to raise awareness among youth activists about women’s movements, feminisms and identity politics. By breaking stereotypes and misconceptions of ideas and definitions, the workshop aims at recalling that women’s issues aren’t just identity politics and being feminist is more than an identity, it is “global political uprising”. Speakers: Soumeya Lerari - Women's Earth, Climate Action Network International and Mediterranean Youth Climate Network - and Jennifer Philippa Eggert - from Warwick University.

In the framework of the Mediterranean University on Youth and Development, this training raised awareness regarding harmful stereotypes towards women and shared different experiences from both the South and the North of the Mediterranean.

The weeklong activity equipped young activists and educators with tools and methods to enhance gender equality and to promote a positive and non-stereotyped image of women, through education and intercultural dialogue.
