“Since the outset of the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Council of Europe has been clear about its determination to do whatever we can to support the Ukrainian Government and people. President Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula is equally clear about the way out of this brutal, illegal, and ongoing war. Central to that Formula is the need for accountability. To deliver justice and ensure a sustainable peace. On this, the Council of Europe is undertaking key initiatives”, stated Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić while addressing the Summit on Peace in Ukraine at the Bürgenstock (Canton of Nidwalden), in Switzerland. The Secretary General referred to the establishment of the Register of Damage as the first step towards an international mechanism that will ensure justice and compensation for Ukraine and its people.
“There must also be accountability for the fate of the vulnerable and here I think particularly of Ukraine’s children. The Council of Europe has been clear that children who have been forcibly transferred or unlawfully deported to Russia or to the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine must be identified and returned”, added Marija Pejčinović Burić.
The Summit, with 101 delegations from countries and international institutions from around the world, aimed at developing a common understanding and a roadmap for a just and lasting peace in the country.
