A new Joint Programme of the European Union and Council of Europe “Roma Holocaust Remembrance and Education (RomaMemory”) officially started in May 2024 and will be implemented for the period of 24 months. The kick-off event will take place on 11-12 June 2024 in Strasbourg, during the 17th Meeting of the Council of Europe dialogue with Roma and Traveller civil society, “Teaching Roma and Travellers History. Roma Holocaust Remembrance, Recognition and Education”.
The project aims at advancing the fight against discrimination and antigypsyism, which is a key objective and cross-cutting priority in the EU Roma strategic framework for equality, inclusion and participation, and in the Council of Europe Strategic Action Plan on Roma and Traveller Inclusion (2020-2025). It also aims to raise awareness of broad audience about Roma history and culture, and the Roma Holocaust. Through the project, an informal European coalition of inter-governmental organisations and Roma and Sinti organisations will be established, to align priorities and co-ordinate initiatives in the area of Roma Holocaust remembrance and education.
The project will enhance co-operation with the media, public authorities, and Roma youth organisations for a better outreach to general public on the topic of Roma Holocaust and for the advancement of recognition and remembrance of the Roma Holocaust across the EU Member States.
The activities will increase awareness, capacities and availability of tools to promote and advance with the inclusion of Roma history teaching in schools, including of the Roma Holocaust, in EU Member States.
The target group of the project are EU Member States, educational authorities, educators, policymakers, journalists and Roma civil society organisations, in particular youth ones.
