Conference on Freedom of Expression Online
28 April 2017, Nicosia, Filoxenia Conference Centre, Cyprus
This Conference is organised by the Supreme Court of Cyprus and the Council of Europe in the framework of the Cypriot Chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers (22 November 2016 - 19 May 2017).
Its main objective is to provide an opportunity for representatives of the judiciary from Member States to reflect on the challenges faced by Courts when applying freedom of expression and rule of law standards to an environment of constant technological evolution. The key note address will be delivered by the Vice-President of the French Conseil d’État, M. Jean-Marc Sauvé.
The relevant case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and of the Court of Justice of the European Union, as well as that of a number of domestic jurisdictions, will be the subject of exchanges between judges and representatives of the Council of Europe, civil society and the private sector, and awareness will be raised of recent standard-setting activities of the Council of Europe in the field of Internet freedom. Key themes to be discussed further include contemporary challenges to the freedom of expression in Europe and the roles and responsibilities of Internet intermediaries in this regard.
