The Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions, also known as the “Macolin Convention”, will enter into force on 1 September. Six countries (Italy, Norway, Portugal, the Republic of Moldova, Switzerland and Ukraine) have ratified it. This treaty is the only legally-binding instrument promoting global co-operation to tackle the manipulation of sports competitions. It has also received firm backing from major sports organisations and partners including FIFA and UEFA. Match-fixing, illegal betting, conflicts of interests and the use of clubs as shell companies are covered by the convention’s wide scope.
